Dead Poets Society

DPS Discussion

Poet Pablo Neruda has written, "Poetry does not belong to those who write it. It belongs to those who need it." How might Mr. Keating respond to this statement? How might Todd? How might the statement relate to the film?

At one point in the movie, Mr. Keating asks the boys why we study poetry. He goes on to explain that poetry is the stuff of life: we live for poetry. Poetry is all about life, death, sex, passion, joy....poetry does not help us live; poetry is why we live. Todd slowly discovered this as the movie progresses. All of the main boys in the film began to see their passions and their very being through the voice of poetry.
