Initially all the students conform to the rules of the school. They have done so for many years. The rules and vows of the school are ingrained in their heads. It is only after Mr. Keating's class that they begin to free their minds and question conformity. They are not rebellious. They simply read poetry to each other in the woods and experience their passions through the written word.
