Debtors' prison was a nineteenth-century English "jail" where people who were in too much debt or could not pay their taxes were sent. They were really more like workhouses where debtors could bring their families. This certainly was not the ideal place to bring up children:it is still a confined space that is dirty, dreary, and filled with poverty.
