Initially, we see Miss Betsey as self-serving and not very nice. She does treat David's mother with complete disrespect and leaves little to the imagination in how she disapproves of her. Miss Betsey does, however, redeem herself when David appears on her doorstep. She provides, reaches out, and even comes to love him. Most of all, she stands up to Murdstone and effectively removes his influence from David's life.... that was a game changer.
