Em'ly discusses her fear of water with David in the chapter, and then runs across the timber (somewhat of a pier) and frightens him. This confession and experience foreshadow Em'ly's future and are the reason David says that it might have been "better for little Em'ly to have had the waters close above her head that morning . . ."
