Peggotty is completely loyal to both David and his mother. She is motherly, caring, and works hard (physically) to take care of her charges. It is also worth noting that Peggotty loves David as her own, and even cherishes his childhood belongings (the crocodile book), which she saves to give him as an adult.

Mrs Copperfield is very different from Peggotty. She is beautiful, irresponsible, and has never grown up the be the wife or mother she became. Clara throws tantrums, and sticks her nose up when given advice. She marries a man, who plays father and wants control of everything and because Clara is incapable of doing for herself....... he takes complete control.

In contrasting the two women above, it is most important to note that the nurse and housekeepers had all the motherly traits that the mother and wife lacked.
