Peggotty joins David for the beginning of the trip and gives him money and food for the journey. When she departs, the carriage driver, Mr. Barkis, asks David about her, hinting that he is interested in Peggoty. When he arrives at the transfer point, he is at the mercy of strangers, people trying to trick him out of his money and food. The jouney to London is uncomfortable and long, and when he arrives at the station he is left alone, waiting for someone to meet him. After a time, Mr. Mell, one of the teachers at Salem House, appears to take him to Salem House.
