How and Why does Henry James write his sentences as if they can be paragraphs on their own?

I'm asking about his style of writing; but, only pertaining to Daisy Miller.

I did a short paper on a topic similar to this in college about James' extensive use of modifiers. Realizing that James is a master of perception, one reason that he used such elaborate, image and modifier rich sentences is so that he controls the perception on the part of the reader. Hope that helps some.
