Sir Philip moves to Lonsdale after inheriting the estate from his grandfather.

We'd been a happy enough family in our valley till young Sir Philip Morton had inherited his grandfather's estate a couple of years before. Brownriggs, Bells, Atkinsons, Hudsons, Cockbains—we were all old farming famihes, who had kept our sheep on the fells since Domesday Book or the founding of Rome or, for all I know, since the Flood itself.
