On chapter 18 Why didn't the police give the bad news to Mrs. Jarvis first?

Mrs. Jarvis is watching at the window. Mr. Jarvis happens to be outside watching over his fields. Also it is easier for the police to break such news to Mr. Jarvis because Mrs. Jarvis ends up screaming and breaking down at the news of her son's death.
