The ruling class of whites believe that crime is relegated to the black masses who do not know how to respect law and order. The whites see them as uneducated and inferior to whites. The whites generally feel that black workers are taking advantage of white owners of the mines. The mines are barely making money and, according to Harrison, blacks are demanding ten schillings a shift: much more than the three schillings they are getting. Harrison and many whites believe that blacks know nothing about economics and should be grateful they have a job in the first place.
