Kumalo's return home is one of welcome. He's welcomed by several of the villagers but most of all his wife. He introduces his wife to her daughter-in-law and grandson after informimg her that Absalom will soon die.

With Kumalo's return, the tone of the novel changes. Things are no longer about "individuals," but about the community as a whole.
