Thayer's words are intended to shame Anthony... to make him understand the ramifications of his actions. Thayer's words are meant to wake Anthony up, and in the end, this exchange becomes the catalyst for Anthony's later actions. Namely, his freeing of the Asians being smuggled and sold.
