In chapter 28, a mother and her children are starving as their family succumbs to smallpox. Finally, , the mother falls ill and brings the Church's ban on her home. She has waited since to die. (here the catholic church is condemned)

Hank worked in secret to improve his own living standards and those of the peasants out of fear the church would interfere. It wasn't long before he had telephone and telegraph services set up, all on the sly.
