Is the old man a simle or more complex character

I think we need to ask ourselves if there is more to the old man than simply what Hemingway has told us. I think, as a character, the old man is simple. He borders on a flat character but he represents something more complex within the human psyche. I know the answer doesn't sound definitive but I think this to be the case.
