Death is such a large theme in the novel that we can't miss Grandpa's feelings about God, or the fact that he is Will's spiritual mentor. Grandpa says that God doesn't interfere with either death or healing, and he believes that prayer holds no weight with God in this area. Rucker believes that God will not change that fate he has set for us, but that He does provide strength in times of need.
