If Freud is right, then changing oneself is impossible without changing the social environment within which that self is situated and even created. "Civilization" marks the process by which human beings are separated from their "true" nature: namely, the unrelenting, primal flux of the unconscious. It is up to us, then, to try and "de-civilize" (liberate) ourselves.
