Tianjin's position at the intersection of the Grand Canal and the Peiho River connecting Beijing made it a key place for thew opium trade.

The French influence was very strong following the opium war because they won over china, and following their victory, the French took plots of land and divided them up amongst themselves. As the French began to move into china they bought their own culture with them and it was considered wealthy and trending.
