This is a sad tale. I suppose different readers feel different things but generally Big Sister is not a sympathetic character. She is hard on Adeline and often cruel. It seems much of the family blames the death of mother on poor Adeline. Adeline is a very sympathetic character. She literally was a "cinderella-figure" having to put up with abuse from just about everybody she knew. She bares her pain with dignity without losing her kindness. One has to really admire her.
