This book is set in 1941. The culture of china was patriarchal meaning men made all the decisions. There were pecking orders within each family. Boys were favoured over girls because they could bring in wealth and pass on their father's name. Girls like Adeline are low in the family hierarchy. The narrative follows Adeline's struggles of isolation from her family that was, at times, abusive. I might consider father as an example of someone representing the time period. I included him in one of my prior answers to you.
