This poem is a classic example of an English sonnet.

The first stanza is an uncharacteristically flippant way to say goodbye to a lover. The second is a reinforcement of this point, saying that the former love ought not to inhibit a future meeting. The third gathers tension for the final couplet, which ends with hope for a love beyond death.
