Charlotte Perkins Gilman: Poems Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Symbol for security and safety

In the poem entitled "To the indifferent Women’’, the narrator criticizes the women who refuse to get involved in the problems society has and those who chose to stay separated from everything. The narrator mentions how those people chose to lock themselves in their homes and to ignore everything around them. the term "home’’ is used thus in this context as a symbol to suggest the safety given by keeping oneself separated from the rest of the world and by refusing to acknowledge the problems that exist nowadays.

The door

The poem "Locked Inside’’ begins with the picture of a woman, locked inside room and trying to get out. The woman beats on the door but no one lets her out so she remains locked inside. The door is used here as a symbol that stands for the social limits put on women and the way they are forced to behave in a certain way because of social norms.

Women have the power

One of the common motifs that appears in the poems is the idea that women have a much bigger power than they thing. In the poem "Locked Inside’’ the narrator talks how women who find themselves in a situation where they feel as if they can’t escape have more power than they give themselves and in the poem "To the indifferent women’’ the narrator mentions how women have the power to change the world and affect society as a whole.

Women are nurturers

One of the common motif that appears in the poems is the idea that women are nurturers. The narrator mentions how throughout history, women were primarily mothers. While their roles evolved, they still remained the same and they brought their main qualities into the work they did and into the way they lived their lives.

Women as housewives

Another common motif that appears in the poems is the portrayal of the modern woman as a housewife. The narrator uses this image in many of her poems and claims how women are mostly seen in this light no matter what they do. The role of the housewife is sometimes portrayed as being a negative one since the narrator believes it stops a woman from truly meeting her potential.
