MS mcpherson is potrayed as a strong character as she breaks all society expectations and shows that she is powerful by living a life alone after her husbands death. after the husbands death, her children dont care about her anymore and tell about how bad she was at nursing and how they hated to live in the house. They are fighting over that who should keep her as they dont want to take care of her. She is powerful as instead of crying or mourning over her deceased husband, she becomes more active and says, " I am alive." She is smart also as the lawayer says, " I have always found her a women of remarkable intelligence." She tells that her son and daughters are no longer small children and are grownups who can look after each other. She finally is free and says, " I have done my duty and considered Mr mcphersons wishes for 30 years now ill do what i want." She further shows her strenghth by telling how she earned money while her husband was sick. She said that half the house was a hospital with dozens of patients. she made money on her own and she took out her black veil. she said, " 30 years i spent with your father now 30 years i will spend on my own." She decided to go to newzeland and austrialia.
