Charlotte Bronte: Poems Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Rain

In the poem entitled {"Life’’, the narrator uses rain as a symbol for the possible problems men and women may have to deal with. The narrator stresses the idea how even though many are quick to dislike rain, we always have to keep in mind that rain is what produces the many things making us happy.

The cloud

Another symbol that appears in the poems are the clouds mentioned by the narrator. The clouds are used in the poems as a symbol for the possibility of bad things happening and also to suggest a negative state of mind. This symbol appears predominately in the poem "On the Death of Anne Bronte’’, in which the narrator talks about her sister’s death.

Things worth dying for

One of the common motifs that appears in the poems is the idea that the narrator feels as if there are some things a person could chose to sacrifice their love for. The narrator reveals in some of the poems how she could happily give up her life just to have the chance to experience something she never did until then or to see someone she was missing. In the poem "Passion’’ for example, the narrator is willing to give up her life just to experience love for one night, and in the poem "On the death of Anne Bronte’’ she is ready to give up her life just to make sure her sister will live once more.

Symbol for strenght

In the poem entitled "Passion’’ the narrator mentions how passion gives "nerve’’ to her arm. The term "arm’’ is used in this context of a symbol for power and trough this the narrator wanted to suggest how passion gives her power.

Symbol for rejection

At the end of the poem "Passion’’, the narrator mentions how she drank the dregs left on the bottom of a wineglass. "Dregs" refers here to the residue left from drinks and foods, sediment that is often thrown away. By mentioning the dregs she drank, the narrator made reference to the fact she was rejected. Because of this, the dreg is used here as a symbol for rejection.
