The mother

The mother is presented in the poem ‘’As the Dead Prey Upon Us’’ as sitting in the living room, probably watching TV, while the dead walk around her. This suggests that the memory of those who passed is present in our everyday lives and how more than often we are unable to recognize their presence.

The young man

Another character in the poem ‘’As the Dead Prey Upon Us’’ is the young man with whom the narrator talks with. The young man is unnamed but he comes from hell. It is also alluded that the young man is still in hell because he lives a bored existence.

The Indian woman

The Indian women is present in the poem ‘’As the Dead Prey Upon Us’’ as the women who helps walk the deer around the room. The idea transmitted is that the Indian women is more privileged that the deer.

The deer

The deer is used here as a personification for the black population that was granted some form of rights and equality.

The father

The father of the narrator is mentioned in the poem ‘’ The Librarian’’. He is called a leader and he was the owner of a shop where he sold manuscripts and books. The narrator mentioned how he would spend a lot of time in the shop with his father and that he later visited the shop with his family.

The wife

The wife is also mentioned in the poem ‘’The Librarian’’. She remains unnamed but she accompanies her husband when he returns to his father’s shop.

The son

The son is another character in the poem ‘’The Librarian’’. The son goes with the narrator and his mother to his grandfather’s former shop.

The former wife

The former wife is mentioned in the poem ‘’The Librarian’’ and she is the narrator’s first wife who cheated on him.

The Librarian

The librarian appears in the poem ‘’The Librarian’’ and he is the man with whom the former wife slept with.

The daughter

The daughter is mentioned in ‘’The Librarian’’ and she remained in the narrator’s birth city while he moved in another part of the country. It is implied she is an adult woman.

The victim

The victim appears in the poem ‘’The Librarian’’. He is beat in an ally and his abuse is witnessed by the narrator who does nothing to help him.

The cops

The cops appear in the poem ‘’The Librarian’’ and they chase down the narrator after he runs away from the scene of a beating.

Fernand

Fernand is the man who appears in the first part of the poem ‘’ The Kingfishers’’. He leaves the party in a hurry after making some comments which enraged those at the party.

The priests

The priests appear in the third part of the poem "The Kingfishers’’ and they urge the people to go and fight for the Gods.

The Gods

The Gods mentioned in the poem "The Kingfishers’’ are presented as being absent and unable to protect themselves.
