Neither of the children had love or the kind of normal relationship a child has with his/her father.

Neither child has a sense of relationship or is able to form an emotional relationship. Newt seems unable to feel even base emotions.

Newt was kicked out of school and his fraternity because of his grades.

Frank enjoys watching the pain and torment of living things (making the bugs fight). The children have no sense of morality.

Angela has no life of her own, she is the designated caregiver (maid, cook, housekeeper) after her mother's death. Angela's desire for her own home and marriage leads her to trade secrets for a husband.
