why is Maggie''a cat on hot tin roof''

Maggie is the play's cat. Much like a "cant on a hot tin roof", Maggie is hysterical and skittish. She pines away for Brick who refuses to see her as an object of desire. The result is a very moody, nervous and often chaotic woman.
