Ironically Casablanca was written while the movie was being shot. It was not seen as anything special foe Warner Brothers but ended up being one of the greatest cult classics of all time. There are so many reasons for this. The two main plot lines work so well together. The central setting of Rick's Cafe works to ground everything including plot, characters, themes....It is this familiarity that draws the audience in. The characters are warm and affable. Everybody seems to have good manners, even the villain Major Heinrich Strasser. I think that in the end all the stars aligned for this film: everything works. People return to this film again and again because it is warm and familiar, like a cozy sweater.
