Candide

What historical person might the merchant Vanderdendur represent?

Louix XIV, who will inevitably censor Voltaire for his satires or Van Duren, a bookseller with whom Voltaire argued over an important manuscript.

I think he represents the bookseller....... Van Duren was seen as deceptive by Voltaire, and our character was a deceptive merchant and cruel slaveowner. Louis XIV really doesn't fet into that description.
