There are many potential answers to this question, but I think one of the most convincing is Voltaire's critique of religion as either blatant hypocrisy or mere personal belief. The several Catholic leaders display their immorality by directly contradicting their respective oaths of celibacy, poverty, etc., but even the seemingly pious Jacques seems to hold on to his "faith" in a more personal, emotive way.
