The story begins with a pretty naive. He is reveres his tutor's optimism and remains clueless about the harsh realities of the world. Despite wealth and a little world-weary experience, Candide remains optimistic without considering the reality of his world or situations. He seems incapable of forming his own opinions even within the most obvious of situations. He gives money to strangers, like Brother Giroflee, without question of their character or motive. He decides to marry Cunégonde even though he feels no love for her. He remains optimistic that things will just work out.
