Why was Buck treated so poorly by all these men, especially the driver in the red shirt?

The goal of the man in the red sweater was to break Buck. He didn't want his love; he wanted his obedience and complete subservience.

Hal is completely different. He buys Buck, but he doesn't beat him because he wants to break him; he beats him because he's an angry, violent, and selfish young man.
