what did spitz look like

Spitz is the leader of the dog team that Buck is first attached to. He is the typical "dog in charge" and punishes the other dogs when they do not do what they are supposed to do. He has no "values" and is only interested in his own survival or the survival of the team. He is large, as is Buck, and he can easily put most of the other dogs in their place. Only at the end when he has to fight Buck for leadership of the team do we see that he would prefer to die rather than simply be conquered.
