To "anthropomorphize" means giving human-like qualities to animals. I think London was keenly aware of not turning his stories into silly tales of talking animals. He keeps Buck and his life grounded in the natural elements. The things Buck feels and experiences are very organic to the natural world yet are also accessible to the reader.
