Buck learns quickly that he isn't in California anymore. In the chapter "The Club and Fang", Buck learns the unforgiving nature of both man and beast. Buck must fight for everything or die. As a sled dog, Buck quickly takes the alpha dog leadership away from Spitz. This brings him more in tune with his inner wolf. It isn't long before Buck finally breaks free of the loyalties that bind him to man to become the supreme Alpha Dog he was meant to be, finally accepting the call of the wild.
