Is it possible to interpret the dogs as symbolic? What passages might suggest they are more than just characters?

I don't think London's animal characters were symbols or personifications of humans. Jack London was all about naturalism and the unique traits of animals which enable them to flourish in the harshest of environments. He anthropomorphizes them only to a point so we can connect with them on some level.
