You are right, Buck does get a break now and then but he also goes through his share of hardships. It is true he has a couple of good masters. This allows Buck to heal his wounds and develop self-esteem. Buck needs this for many of his hardships like bad owners and a fight to near death with the dog Spitz. I think luck does not play a huge factor in that Buck's journey is riddled with bad luck as well.
