Yes Buck dreams of a hairy man squatting by the fire,

"At other times this hairy man squatted by the fire with head between his legs and slept. On such occasions his elbows were on his knees, his hands clasped above his head as though to shed rain by the hairy arms."

There isn't a definite answer to who this man his. I think he is more symbolic than anything else. He represents Buck breaking away from his domesticated life with the judge to a more wild life with "wilder" men. It is a dream that seems to guide him through his deconstruction from domestic pet to alpha-dog of the wild.

He was a hairy man sitting by the fire.

That's funny while reading the book I had realized Buck went from domestic dog to primitive dog and now Buck will have to face reality whether he is going to stay with John Thorton who gives Buck so much love keeps bringing love to that timber wolf who Buck is curious about.
