Call of the Wild by Jack London – Study Guide Questions

Anthropomorphism is one of the primary literary techniques used by Jack London in The Call of the Wild. How was London able to use this technique to express his ideas about human as well as canine nature?

In The Call of the Wild London uses his own style of “anthropomorphism” or the description of an animal with human-like qualities and traits. Consider phrases like  “…Buck possessed a quality that made for greatness—imagination.” Certainly animals do not overtly think like this but London gives enough human perspective for the reader to relate to Buck without having the animals speak. London keeps his dogs within the context of naturalism without destroying their authenticity (like say a Disney cartoon with animals speaking).
