The setting changes from Buck's pampered life in California to his harsh and wild life in the Yukon Territory, Each place reflects to the development of Buck's character. Buck reacts and adapts to his different surroundings. The harsh Yukon Territory transforms Buck into the wild alpha dog he was meant to be.
