In chapter 6, why did the m an in the overalls call Bud Clarence

The man refers to Bud as Clarence in order to make him look like a part of his family. Bud is at the mission but doesn't make it into the food line before it closes. Seeing Bud, the man walks back and takes Bud into the line with his own children, insuring that Bud will have something to eat.
