Brighton Rock, Part 5, Chapter 5, can someone help?

Brighton rock part 5 chapter 5. ‘He tried to inject himself with pride but all the time his eyes went back to the humiliation’. What does this one line reveal to us of pinkies character at this stage in the novel?

In context, Pinkie is trying to act his part..... all while knowing that he was, in fact, responsible for Spicer's death. We can take this in a few different ways..... but I believe it exposes the fact that he isn't quite as hard as he'd like to be..... possibly, he has a conscience.
