What is the significance of the place john chooses to kill himself ?

John hangs himself on the archway of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is an anomaly in BNW as is John. He is drawn to the lighthouse to give him some direction. Perhaps looking over the wide expanse of God's world, John thought he might find direction. In the end he found nothing, he betrayed himself and his sense of morality. He chose the lighthouse, that strange looking building to end his strange and tortured life.
