Brave New World

What is Soma a metaphor? And how can it be applied to our world today?

In the book it says that Soma is like Christianity without the tears, where is this seen in today's society? Is Soma a metaphor for anything other than drugs?

A soma holiday is a drug-induced form of relaxation. The stress of the reservation is too much for Lenina so she takes a strong dose and sleeps for 18 hours. Soma is an escape from reality similar to many narcotics that people might take today. Certainly people today take any manner of drugs to escape emotional and physical pain. They cease to experience reality preferring an altered state of consciousness.
