Why does John tell Bernard that he is more like what he was like on the reservation? How does Bernard respond?

John acts more sympathetically toward Bernard because he is once again humble and reflective. He explains that Bernard now acts more as he did when they first met. Bernard responds, “Because I’m unhappy again; that’s why.”
