Bernard is an Alpha Elite. He can enjoy all manner of perks granted to the elite. Bernard, however, does not conform to the standards of his caste. He does not take pleasure in having multiple sexual partners or taking soma. Bernard thinks "outside of the box" or the social parameters of the state. He is deemed dangerous to the state and sent Iceland.
