What is the symbolism of the "Marigolds" in the section of Autumn ?

The Marigolds referred as flowers are mentioned in the page following the Title Autumn . I wonder what it symbolises for ? Please help me out on this ?

Marigolds are symbolic of life.... renewal and birth. The marigolds are planted by Claudia and Frieda in the hopes Pecola's baby will have a safe birth. Unfortunately, the flowers never bloom.... foreshadowing the baby's death.
