Bluest Eye

What is the significance of Shirley Temple to Morrison's Novel?

Watch this six-minute clip of The Littlest Rebel and ask yourself if Shirley Temple would get away with this behavior if she weren't white.

At one point later in the film, Shirley Temple disguises herself as a black girl and the treatment she receives for similar behavior is very different. For our characters in The Bluest Eye, you can see why they would prefer to be Shirley Temple (and drink from a Shirley Temple cup) when they see how adults respond to her.
