There is more than one instance in chapter seven where Pauline does a bit of daydreaming while working. At the beginning of the chpater she's in charge of the children and chores at home; she dreams of a handsome stranger, and she gets him!

She marries Cholly and goes on to become a housekeeper, once again taking care of someone else's home. Now she dreams of money and nicer clothes, and the ability to socialize amongst the women who don't accept her.
