Well, you could go either gender or colour, but that is hardly original. Abuse and perception are also well-worn. Why don't go with how the seasons are mirrored in the characters' experiences or maybe compare the houses and environments to the characters (you could make use of the clean/dirty motif there too). Just some ideas.
